This site has been developed to be a resource, advocacy and continuing education tool for all Peer Providers, in Wisconsin and Nationwide, to assist them in their pursuit of the development, education  and sustainability of  the profession of Peer Provider.  It is our sincere hope that all persons involved in the Recovery process utilize this resource.  This includes those receiving mental health/AODA services, community organizations who wish to become involved in the process, peer supports, Recovery Coaches, Family Advocates, other specialty Peer Providers and providers of services.  We welcome any comments and suggestions which might improve the effectiveness of this site.

OUR HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

The Wisconsin Association of Peer Specialist met for the first time on July 25-26, 2009.  At that time,  26 Peer Specialists from geographically diverse areas of the state of Wisconsin joined to create the mission, vision and value statements of what was then referred to as the Wisconsin Peer Specialist Association Initiative and renamed the group to its current name, The Wisconsin Association of Peer Specialists.  An advisory Board of Directors was chosen at that time.  The meeting and start up funds were provided by a Medicaid Infrastructure CARS  provided  by the State of Wisconsin.  Grassroots Empowerment Project, Inc., a consumer run advocacy group in the state of Wisconsin was chosen by MIG as the fiscal agent for the Association until it obtains 501 (c) 3 status.   The Association became incorporated in January 2010.  Funding ended under the MIG initiative on July 31, 2010.    We had our first statewide Association meeting in November 2010 and have submitted our 501(c)3 application to the IRS.  Due to the integration of mental health and substance use disorder services, and the inclusion of Peer Providers in community services and other areas within health services, the Board of Directors voted to change the name, in December 2012, to the Wisconsin Association of Peer Providers, Inc.
